The Breath Between Her Words

I knew you had something on your mind
When you had nothing much to say;
When you spoke I could feel the worry,
You nearly lost your way;
I read the breath between your words
For what I hoped I wouldn’t find;
There’s always something left unsaid
When we’re trying not to be unkind.

I searched the places in your head
Where you run from pain and hide;
I looked for signs that might show me
You’d run away and leave my side;
The bleakness of your hope a sign
Among the clash of fears upon your soul;
But I was afraid of what I might find,
I couldn’t bear to pay that toll.

There are moments when we wonder,
How can I do this thing?
How can I bear this change of life
I don’t know what it may bring;
It’s in those single moments,
When we find ourselves alone,
We find our inner selves afraid,
Of the lover we want most.

I searched the world behind the blinks
Of your distant, despairing eyes,
For anything that might explain your silence
Unsaid, untold, covered up in caring lies;
I think I felt the hesitation in you
Every time you twisted yourself free
In the way you slipped out of my arms
And turned your lips away from me.

Maybe loving me might take too long
“Till death do us part,” you’d say;
Maybe I’m afraid you’re not sure anymore
That I’d want you enough to make you stay;
But in those interludes of faltering faith
It’s important for you to understand;
You can always run and hide from me
Then come back, I’ll be waiting for your hand.

There are moments when we wonder,
How can I do this thing?
How can I bear this change of life
I don’t know what it may bring;
It’s in those single moments,
When we find ourselves alone,
We find the inner strength we need,
And the lover we want most.
