Apollo 8 returned to Earth on this date in 1968. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders were the first humans to view Earth in her entirety from space, and see the dark side of the moon. They and the command module were recovered in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii by the USS Yorktown.
